Musician and guitarist Laszlo Buring returns with another creative arrangement inspired by the unmistakable sound of Dire Straits.

We have previously featured Laszlo on Dire Straits Blog, including his impressive versions of Layla and Sultans of Swing” in the style of Pink Floyd. His unique approach to classic songs continues to attract fans who enjoy imagining how famous tracks might sound in a completely different musical style.

This time, Laszlo presents his interpretation of “I Shot the Sheriff” as if it had been written by Dire Straits. The performance received a warm response from music fans and quickly became another favorite among followers of his YouTube channel.

We had the opportunity to speak with Laszlo about the idea behind this arrangement, and he shared several interesting details.

“I Shot the Sheriff is the eighth song I did in the style of Dire Straits. I based it more on Clapton’s version than on the one by Bob Marley and the Wailers. Clapton’s version has more guitar parts in it, especially his live version from Crossroads.”

Laszlo also explained why he believed the song suited his “If It Were Written By…” series.

“I thought this song would fit in the series because it has a bit of a Wild West feeling, something Dire Straits captured beautifully in several of their songs. Unlike the original, I didn’t start with the chorus. Instead, I opened with a short guitar introduction followed by the first verse because I couldn’t think of a Dire Straits song that begins directly with the chorus.”

To give the arrangement even more dynamics, Laszlo added a breakdown before the third verse and finished the song with a melodic guitar solo after the final chorus.

He also made an important musical adjustment.

“I transposed the song one step higher to A minor, which is the same key as ‘Once Upon a Time in the West.’ I sang it one octave lower to better match Mark Knopfler’s voice and timbre.”

The result is a creative interpretation that blends the songwriting of Bob Marley, the guitar influence of Eric Clapton, and the unmistakable atmosphere of Dire Straits.

For this recording, Laszlo played his Fender Vintera through a Fender Blues Junior amplifier.

“I’m really loving the sound of it so far.”

He also used his new Squier Jazz Bass during the recording.
