Christie’s prestigious reputation naturally led to the decision to conduct Mark Knopfler’s auction through their network. On November 23, 2023, Christie’s excitedly announced that they would facilitate the auction of guitars from the personal collection of Mark Knopfler—the frontman of the iconic British rock band Dire Straits—as indeed they did.
Selling your valuable items with Christie’s auction house
Knopfler’s guitar collection comprised more than 120 guitars and amps, spanning his 50-year career. It chronicles the diverse array of instruments he has used to write, record, and perform his extensive catalog of compositions for Dire Straits, as well as numerous successful solo albums and film soundtracks.
The collection featured world-famous names such as Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, and Martin, alongside custom-built models by Rudy Pensa and John Suhr. Additionally, Mark Knopfler’s collection included bespoke guitar examples crafted by luthiers from across the globe.
Before the auction took place, fans from around the world had the opportunity to view the complete collection of guitars up close. Initially, they had the chance to do so in New York galleries from December 9 to 13, 2023. Following New York, fans from Europe had the opportunity to see and discover the incredible collection at Christie’s in London from January 19 to 30, 2024.
