In 2021, a 1964 Fender Jazzmaster that was once owned by the legendary Jimi Hendrix went up for sale on Reverb.com. This ultra-rare electric guitar was accompanied by the Marshall Super Lead amp that Hendrix used during his famous Woodstock performance and was priced at $750,000.
The guitar eventually sold for $384,000 at Julien’s Auctions in 2022. Now, it has been acquired by Jim Irsay. Jim is the owner of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts franchise and a renowned guitar collector.
Hendrix used the Jazzmaster during his time as a sideman in 1964 and 1965, performing with the Isley Brothers and Little Richard. He kept the guitar in his New York City apartment until he gave it to Billy Davis, a guitarist for Hank Ballard & The Midnighters, in 1969. Davis was a significant influence on Hendrix and gave him some of his earliest guitar lessons.
Davis and Hendrix’s ex-girlfriend, Lithofayne Pridgon, provided letters of authenticity for the guitar, which despite showing some signs of wear and tear, was listed as in “very good” condition. The Jim Irsay Collection, known for its exceptional collection of guitars, has now added the Jazzmaster to its ranks. The collection includes Kurt Cobain’s Smells Like Teen Spirit Fender Mustang and David Gilmour’s legendary Black Strat.
Jim Irsay also added a 1992 Gibson Hummingbird to his collection. That guitar was played by Bob Dylan at Bill Clinton’s presidential inauguration concert in 1993. However, the exact amount paid for the Jazzmaster and Hummingbird remains undisclosed.
