The Knopfler family shared sad news in July 2020. Ruth Selma Knopfler, the older sister of legendary musician Mark Knopfler, has passed away at the age of 73.

Ruth Selma Knopfler was the first child of Erwin Knopfler and Louisa Mary Laidler Knopfler. She was born in Newcastle, United Kingdom, in 1947, and was the older sister of Mark and David Knopfler.

The news of her passing was shared by her daughter, Lulu Kennedy. She posted a collection of family photographs on her official Instagram profile and paid an emotional tribute to her mother with the message:

“RIP Mama <3”

In her tribute, Lulu described Ruth as a unique and unforgettable person. She remembered her mother as a strong, intelligent, funny, and independent woman who always stayed true to herself.

She also shared memories of Ruth’s adventurous life. During her childhood, Lulu experienced different places and lifestyles, including living in Ibiza, Sicily, and later spending time in a caravan on a friend’s farm in Devon.

According to Lulu, Ruth was a passionate university teacher who deeply valued education. She strongly disliked ignorance, misogyny, racism, and unfairness. At the same time, she loved creativity, friendship, adventures, fashion, and spending time with her family.

She wrote:

“The most fierce, clever, funny, and complex character ever. Blessed to have a woman so unapologetically herself bring us up in unusual ways, taking us to live in Ibiza, Sicily, and happiest of all a caravan on our friend’s farm in Devon. An amazing university teacher who breathed education, hated stupidity, misogyny, racism, theories, loved adventures, swearing, friendship, creativity. She adored her gang, kids and grandkids, and was fashion east number one fan. We love you legend!!”
