Dire Straits: Powerful romantic songs

Long time ago when Dire Straits was in the limelight, everybody who loved this band were very addicted to the sound of Dire Straits’ music. Even today there are many people that listen to songs from Dire Straits, because every song from this band has a special “story”.

If you are really a fan of Dire Straits, and you have a bunch of favorite songs, can you imagine how hard it would be if you try to choose one song that will make your day better? Probably it will not happen, but if you are in love, and you have to choose a song from Dire Straits, it probably will happen. Dire Straits has many powerful romantic songs.

Let start at the beginning of Dire Straits and their first album. Remember, there were two sides of the vinyl, on the first side five songs and on the other four. “Water of Love” is a very powerful song, with an easy sound of that electric guitar which Mark played on, and the lyric of the song maybe is too much of a metaphor.

If you look at the text in one part of the song Mark say: “Yes, I need a little water of love.” And on the next part he sing:

“Water of love deep in the ground
But there ain’t no water here to be found
Some day baby when the river runs free
It’s gonna carry that water of love to me”

If you start to think a little deeper, you will come to the conclusion that all this song is, is a big metaphor of strong love between someone. However, this song has a very powerful and dependent sound for our ears.

Next song which also has a powerful sound is from their second album Communiqué. That is “Lady Writer” which has interesting lyrics, but maybe this song too has a metaphorical meaning. This song is from 1979, and when Mark Knopfler was asked what the song was about he said that one day he was watching TV, and there was a lady writer on the TV and basically the idea for this song came from that lady.

Because the song says the writer is “talking about the Virgin Mary”, some have speculated that the writer in question is Marina Warner, a view shared by Warner herself. But this two lyrics are very “romantic” and someone will find himself in it.

“Lady writer on the TV
She had another quality
The way you used to look
And I know you never read a book”

“Just the way that her hair fell down around her face
And I recall my fall from grace
Another time, another place”

It is difficult now to say what the author wanted to say within this song, but everyone can and has the right to interpret what they want.

Probably the most romantic album from Dire Straits is Making Movies released in 1983, with seven songs, two of them include word “love” in the title – “Tunnel of Love” and “Expresso Love”. But we cannot forget one of the best classic songs from Dire Straits – “Romeo and Juliet”, the lyrics of the song describe the experience of the two lovers of the title and their love situation.

“Tunnel of Love” is a beautiful song with that Rock N’ Roll rhythm and little smooth sound of electric guitar which makes this song to be a romantic power and adapt to every situation.

“And girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the Spanish city to me when we were kids
Oh girl it looks so pretty to me just like it always did
Like the Spanish city to me when we were kids”

The words of lyrics above, touch every romantic soul, and without thinking we can say that “Tunnel of Love” is one of the most favorite songs of the fans because it has a special and easy rhythm that caresses your soul.

One more song from Making Movies“Expresso Love” with a different style but same like “Tunnel of Love” had positive ratings and reviews from the audience and fans of Dire Straits. The song has interesting lyrics which merges with the rhythm of the song and guitars in the background. From this song Mark, likes to say that everyone even those which are deep in love want everything from everyone. It is difficult to figure out, but the most important thing is to listen to the songs that we love.

“She call me just to talk
She’s my lover, she’s a friend of mine
She says hey mister you wanna take a walk
In the wild west end sometime
And I get trouble with my breathing
She says boys don’t know anything
But I know what I want
I want everything”
