The second song on this amazing studio album by Dire Straits is the song called “News.” The subject of this Mark Knopfler composition is by no means obvious.
The reference to a man climbing onto his “horse” could be misconstrued, it is actually about a motorcyclist who is killed in a road accident. Knopfler worked as a reporter on the Yorkshire Evening Post for a while, although this was apparently not inspired by a story he covered.
It is not that dissimilar for Elton John’s “Song for Guy,” which is a tribute to a record company messenger who was likewise killed in a road crash and was recorded the previous year.
Communiqué is the second album by Dire Straits released in 1979. The album cover was designed by Hothouse, art directed by Alan Schmidt with the cover illustration by Geoff Halpin. To sum up, on this album, there are a total of nine songs, and “News” as the second one at side one, runs to 4 minutes and 14 seconds.

Lyrics
He sticks to his guns
He take the road as it comes
It take the shine off his shoes
He says it’s a shame
“You know, it may be a game
Ah, but I won’t play to lose”
He’s burning the grass
He take up a glass,
Swallow it neat,
Crosses the floor,
Open the door,
Take a sniff of the street
And she tell him that he’s crazy
She’s a-saying
“Hey baby, I’m your wife”
Yeah, she tell him that he’s crazy
For gambling a-with his life
But he climbs on his horse
You know he feel no remorse
He just a-kicks it alive
His motor is fine
He take it over the line
Until he’s ready to dive
And she tell him that he’s crazy
Yes, she’s saying
“Listen baby, I’m your wife”
Yeah, she tell him that he’s crazy
For gambling a-with his life
He sticks to his guns
He take the road as it comes
It take the shine off his shoes
He says it’s a shame
“You know, it may be a game
Ah, but I won’t play to lose”
He sticks to his guns
He take the road as it comes
It take the shine off his shoes
He’s too fast to stop
He take it over the top
He make a line in the news
