In 2021, the 1964 Fender Jazzmaster appeared for sale on Reverb.com. The rare instrument came with a Marshall Super Lead amplifier connected to Hendrix’s legendary performance at Woodstock.
The original asking price reached $750,000, reflecting the incredible historical value of the guitar and its connection to one of the greatest musicians of all time.
However, the guitar eventually sold for $384,000 at Julien’s Auctions in 2022. After the auction, Jim Irsay added this remarkable piece of Hendrix history to his personal collection.
Jimi Hendrix’s Early Years With the Jazzmaster
Although many fans associate Hendrix with Fender Stratocasters, this Jazzmaster represents an important period before his worldwide fame. Hendrix used the guitar during 1964 and 1965 while working as a sideman with artists such as The Isley Brothers and Little Richard.
During those years, Hendrix continued developing his unique playing style and building the skills that would later make him a legendary guitarist. He kept the Jazzmaster in his New York City apartment before giving it to guitarist Billy Davis in 1969.

The guitar carries an incredible story, and several details helped confirm its authenticity. Billy Davis and Hendrix’s former girlfriend Lithofayne Pridgon provided letters of authenticity for the instrument.
Although the Jazzmaster shows signs of use from its long history, experts listed it in “very good” condition. For collectors, these signs of wear make the guitar even more meaningful. They show the journey of an instrument that was part of Hendrix’s early musical evolution.
Jim Irsay’s Legendary Guitar Collection
By adding Hendrix’s Jazzmaster, Jim Irsay expanded one of the most famous guitar collections in the world. The Jim Irsay Collection already includes many historic instruments connected with legendary musicians.
Among them is Kurt Cobain’s Fender Mustang, famously associated with Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” as well as David Gilmour’s legendary Black Strat.
Irsay also added a 1992 Gibson Hummingbird to his collection. Bob Dylan played that guitar during Bill Clinton’s presidential inauguration concert in 1993.
The exact amount Jim Irsay paid for the Hendrix Jazzmaster and the Gibson Hummingbird remains undisclosed.
