Known online as “ladywriter55,” Kelly regularly shares her passion for books and music with her followers. In February 2022, she shared a beautiful photo featuring John Illsley’s autobiography, My Life in Dire Straits, surrounded by several classic Dire Straits vinyl records.
The photo included four important releases from the band’s history: Dire Straits, Communiqué, Making Movies, and Alchemy Live.
However, the most interesting part was not only the beautiful collection, but also Kelly’s personal review of John Illsley’s book.

“As my username may suggest, I am a huge Dire Straits fan. So, I was so excited when this came out.”

“I was brought up on this band, it’s my dad’s favourite, so it was inevitable that I was gonna be a Straits head.”
For Kelly, My Life in Dire Straits provided the missing piece of the story behind a band she had loved for many years.
“The insight into the band, how it formed, its troubles and successes described throughout the book, was the missing piece I didn’t know I needed in this lifelong fandom.”

She explained that the former Dire Straits bassist shared both the successes and difficulties behind the band’s incredible journey.
“John Illsley is humble throughout the book and really gives you the ups and downs you look for in a book of this nature.”

A Special Connection Between Music and Family

She explained that most of her vinyl records came from her father, who introduced her to the band’s music.
“All the vinyl in the image and the rest in my collection was all inherited (stolen) from my dad. Without him there wouldn’t be this ‘crazy’ 29-year-old Dire Straits fan wandering around. So, thanks for being the coolest Daddy.”
Kelly also proudly mentioned that she owns a signed edition of John Illsley’s book.
“It may be daddy’s band, and he may have drunk with Terry one time, but I’ve got John Illsley’s signature because, of course, I had to have the signed edition.”
