Some moments in music and history become unforgettable because they connect different worlds. On October 17, 2020, music and motorsport came together when Mark Knopfler and Guy Fletcher performed a special tribute for legendary racing driver Sir Stirling Moss during Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard.
The world lost Sir Stirling Moss on Easter Sunday 2020 at the age of 90. He was widely regarded as one of the greatest racing drivers in Formula 1 history, despite never winning the World Championship.
Throughout his incredible career, Moss became a symbol of skill, determination, and passion for motorsport. His name remains forever connected with some of the most memorable moments in racing history.
Sir Stirling Moss and His Legendary Connection With Goodwood
Goodwood played a very important role in Sir Stirling Moss’s career. His journey at the famous circuit began with his first single-seater race in 1948, which he won. Years later, Goodwood also became the place connected with the end of his racing career after his serious accident on Easter Monday in 1962.
However, Moss never held any negative feelings toward the circuit. After Goodwood reopened, he returned regularly and continued competing in races, creating many more unforgettable memories for fans around the world.
During SpeedWeek 2020, Goodwood honored his incredible legacy by officially renaming the Kinrara Trophy as the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy.
The tribute also included a special appearance by Ross Brawn, who drove a slow commemorative lap in Moss’s famous 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB/C. This was the same car Moss drove to victory three times in 1960, including his famous win at the Goodwood Tourist Trophy.
