Dire Straits is formed in 1977 when Mark Knopfler moved to London to join his brother David Knopfler, John Illsley, and the bassist Pick Withers. Their debut hit single ‘Sultans of Swing’ was inspired by a jazz band performing in a near-empty pub in South London.

Their 6th album called ‘Brothers in Arms’ spent 271 weeks on the UK charts, and was the first album to hit a million CD sales.
