Within the depths of Paisley Park’s underground bank vault, an extraordinary find emerges. A previously unreleased recording accompanied by an exclusive video that reveals unseen rehearsal footage of Prince & The Revolution.
This revelation sheds light on the origins of Prince’s seminal track, “Nothing Compares 2 U”. This adds a new layer to the legendary musician’s archive.
The original version of “Nothing Compares 2 U” was a meticulous recording made in 1984, unearthed from the vault. Six years before Sinéad O’Connor’s iconic rendition and prior to Prince introducing the song into his live performances.
The track, engineered by Prince’s long-time collaborator Susan Rogers at the Flying Cloud Drive ‘Warehouse’ in Eden Prairie, showcases Prince’s unparalleled talent as he composed, arranged, and performed the song entirely, with Susannah Melvoin and Paul “St. Paul” Peterson lending their backing vocals, and Eric Leeds contributing with saxophone work.
Michael Howe, the designated vault archivist for Prince’s estate, stumbled upon this historical recording during an inventory check of materials from the 1984 era.
In a statement, he reflects, “Upon the discovery of the reel, we proceeded to meticulously analyze and digitize it, revealing a mix so compelling that it indicated the exceptional nature of this track.”
Starting today, music enthusiasts can purchase the original rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U” through digital retailers. Also, it will be released on 7-inch vinyl, including a limited-edition picture disc.
Moreover, a new video accompanying the track showcases never-before-seen rehearsal footage of Prince & The Revolution practicing their choreography in the Eden Prairie warehouse during that same summer of 1984.
