Dear readers, today we want to present you another great video of the song “Sultans of Swing” by Dire Straits. This amazing cover video and arrangement are in a performance by Tiho Vlahovic, a young 24-year-old musician from Croatia. For the first time for Dire Straits Blog, he shares some interesting information about himself and his cover video.
“I come from a small yet really beautiful Croatia. Due to the Covid-19 situation, I am mostly tied to my home island Brac at the moment, but usually, I live on the Brac-Split route,” he said.
“Being in a current lock-down situation, without opportunity for live performance, I got inspired to record some videos in order to keep pursuing what I love the most – music. I can say for myself that I am a professional musician, as I have been a professional guitarist for many famous Croatian bands and musicians ever since I was 17, and also collaborated in numerous smaller projects with lesser or better-known musician colleagues.”
At the age of 10 Tiho started to play the guitar instrument. As he said to us, at the beginning he learned from his father who is a bassist player. “I learned somewhat from my friends, but what taught me the most is continuously listening to my idols,” he added. “I also attended classical music school for a while, but that didn’t appeal to me in those years”.
Tiho also shared with us his interesting story about his connection and love with Dire Straits and their music.
“But what did appeal to me was hearing Dire Straits for the first time. In fact, ‘Sultans of Swing’ was the song that was playing. That happened when I was 11-years-old, in a restaurant waiting for a take-out pizza. I remember being in complete awe and asking an employee to write down the name of the song on the pizza box.”
“Ever since then, I’ve been hooked to their music, and I absolutely love them as they are original and innovative, but still classic in all segments. ‘Sultans of Swing’ is, of course, nearest and dearest to my heart, but ‘Local Hero,’ ‘On Every Street,’ ‘Tunnel of Love,’ ‘Brothers in Arms,’ are also very often on my repertoire. I have just recently begun to learn how to record and produce on my own, for sure I am preparing more of their covers in the near future,” he added.

Asked what his motto is in life, he answered very simply and consciously. “My motto in life is very simple: always strive to be a good person and always strive for improvement. It might really sound like a cliché, but it really puts the core of life in a few simple words. My motivation that always pushes me to advance further is a wish to correct my human flaws, as that always leads to life development of all kinds, and as such is reflected in the music.”
“And what else to say in the end but what a great introduction to musical life. Hearing the masters and themselves and their masterpieces. Mr. Knopfler thank you for the tunes,” he finished.
