Last year Mark Knopfler had his Down the Road Wherever Tour which was a very successful tour and many fans were surprised by Knopfler’s performances and concerts.
We took a look on the numbers that this tour realized and definitely we can say that Mark Knopfler had total 86 shows in 21 different countries, 22 states, he had also 45 touring parties, 10,400 meals in catering, he performed total 1,332 songs on all his concerts and shows during the tour, and there were sold more than 643,000 tickets. These facts are really unforgettable. Mark Knopfler sent his huge thanks to all the fans who came to the concerts and who were a part of his 2019 tour.
Down the Road Wherever is the tenth solo studio album for Mark Knopfler, and with this album, he made a great job with building his own miniature village of the songs as well as he also gives us perfect details and colors to imagine easy his many characters living among each other in his songs.
Knopfler begins with “Trapper Man,” a number about a skilled trapper who makes a butcher’s block out of a trader’s desk that feels more like a subtle allegory for the dirty work that gets done in order for the finer things in life to exist. Knopfler’s characters feel neither autobiographical nor entirely fictional, thanks in large part to his apparent knack for understanding the human condition.
Some of the figures on this album seem to want a return to some long-gone glory days, but Knopfler only sketches out the what of their wistful desires, not their way. Mark Knopfler warps his detailed narratives in tastefully arranged instrumentation, his light touches of fiddle allude to Knopfler’s roots in the British Isles, while horns add flares of soul.
Even Knopfler’s guitar solos feel politely reserved. Though he’s a celebrated guitarist several times over, Knopfler treats his solos as equally important elements in carrying a song to its conclusion rather than opportunities for flashy grandstanding.
If you start with listening to Down the Road Wherever, you’ll find out that this is one absolutely amazing album with a very comfortable arrangement by Mark Knopfler. The album is very warm and cozy, and you can also imagine it like a living room full of old books and smell of pipe tobacco. At times, Knopfler tells us a little bit of his own story, as on “One Song at a Time,” where he sings about his own life’s journey.
