“I used to sit in front of the vinyl player all day and I probably wore that vinyl out completely with the amount of times I listened to it.”
“As soon as I’d saved enough money, I went and got a guitar. Then I sat in front of the vinyl player while trying to teach myself to play along with it.”
For a young guitarist discovering Mark Knopfler’s unique style, those early moments became the foundation of a lifelong passion.

Today, Michael Napoli is a professional musician based in Sydney. Throughout his career, he has performed in various musical productions and projects, including “In the Heights,” “We Will Rock You,” and “Catch Me If You Can.”
He is also part of XO Duo and performs traditional music with the Steki Band. Like many musicians around the world, Michael used the lockdown period as an opportunity to create and explore new ideas.

“I flew over to the UK in May 2019 just to see him on tour at the Royal Albert Hall,” Michael explained. “The show was incredible. It’s been a lifelong dream of mine to see him live, so I’m glad I made it.” For fans who grew up with Dire Straits, stories like Michael’s show the lasting impact of Knopfler’s music across generations.
The Guitar and Equipment Behind the Cover
For his “Money for Nothing” cover, Michael used his Epiphone Dot guitar equipped with Dr. Wolftone Custom Pickups. The amplifier used for the recording was a 1964 Blackface Fender Deluxe, an instrument he describes as a very special discovery.
“I’m very lucky to have found and now own this relic amp,” Michael said. The performance was filmed from the headstock of his guitar using a GoPro Session, creating a unique perspective for viewers.
