NASCAR has been the subject of many great songs over the years. Therefore, NASCAR compiled what he thinks are the nine best tunes right here. As always, the list is subject to debate.

One song was written by Mark Knopfler and he performed together with Emmylou Harris is on the NASCAR list of the greatest racing songs of all time. It is about the song “Speedway at Nazareth”. Is this song is one of the greatest racing songs of all time?

Close your eyes and listen as Mark Knopfler sonically travels the racing circuit, from Phoenix Raceway to Michigan International Speedway to eventually the now–defunct Nazareth Speedway in Pennsylvania.

We’re certain there’s a deeper metaphor in the song, but to be honest, I just listen to him mention racetracks and then yell, “I’ve been there!”. It’s really annoying for everyone else in the car.

Mark Knopfler also shared something about this song with the fans. On his Twitter profile, Mark wrote:

“The song is about perseverance, aspiration, and determination with a Champ car racing theme. Many of the tracks on the CART circuit are mentioned in the song, including Nazareth in the final verse.”

He also added: “I actually wrote the song in the early 1990s. It was set ahead in time and that’s why it refers to 2001 as being in the future. The song was born mostly out of conversations with my friend (former CART and Formula One driver) Stefan Johansson.”
