“What It Is” was the first and lead single song from Mark Knopfler’s second solo studio album, ‘Sailing to Philadelphia’ from 2000. The song is written and recorded by Mark and is pay homage to the city of Edinburgh in Scotland.
Jake Thistle, our dear friend, loyal fan, and very talented musician who have a bright future in what he is doing, once again has made a cover video from Knopfler’s song. This time, his focus was on the song “What It Is.”
“’Sailing to Philadelphia’ is such a brilliant album, and I’ve been listening to it a lot. It’s always a challenge to cover Mark Knopfler songs,” Jake said.
“In addition to being truly great and unique, he uses guitar like a real voice in a way that’s different from a lot of other greats. And he layers different chord structures through the song, which makes it really interesting to do solo. So, it’s always fun to figure out how to make it work solo with a single live loop while trying to keep the spirit of the song alive.”
“This is one of those songs that just speaks to me somehow and a real challenge to play. These kinds of songs help me really think about music and learn from the best. I think of all of the musicians I love as teachers, whether they know it or not. I love to learn, and Mark’s music is a great teacher,” Jake finished.
