The movie starting and opening song is the well-known classic hit song from 1985 by Dire Straits, ‘Money for Nothing’. Experience the iconic opening song of the film “Air” (2023) as Dire Straits’ “Money for Nothing” sets the stage for this captivating story. Immerse yourself in the timeless music that accompanies the birth of a sneaker empire.

For this song, Andrea von Foerster has said:

“Originally, we had ‘Dirty Water’ by Don Henley, and then we tried for ‘Boys of Summer’ for the first main title. It did clear, but we didn’t get it in time. ‘Money for Nothing’ came up right after that, and you can’t do better than that. The fact that it plays under the logos and hits guitar when we start the picture was perfect. But, it’s not from 1984, it’s from ’85, but it’s such an iconic song we felt it was too strong to let it go.”

Film plot

In 1984, Nike, Inc., faced with dwindling basketball shoe sales, embarked on a quest to find a game-changing spokesperson. Enter Sonny Vaccaro, a tenacious Nike employee tasked with discovering a fresh face for the brand. Little did he know that this search would lead to the birth of a sneaker empire and redefine the world of athletic endorsements.

The film commences with Nike on the verge of shuttering its basketball shoe division due to lackluster sales. Sensing an opportunity, Marketing VP Rob Strasser and CEO Phil Knight enlist Sonny Vaccaro to identify a fresh face for the Nike basketball line. Vaccaro stumbles upon the exceptional skills of rookie player Michael Jordan, and a seed of possibility takes root.

Undeterred by the challenge of convincing the Jordan family, Vaccaro embarks on a mission to win them over. With the support of Jordan’s Olympic tournament coach, George Raveling, Vaccaro journeys to Wilmington, North Carolina, to persuade Michael’s mother, Deloris, that Nike can offer her son the attention and opportunities he truly deserves.

As the suspense builds, the film follows Vaccaro’s relentless pursuit of securing Michael Jordan’s endorsement. The story reaches a pivotal moment when a successful meeting takes place at Nike’s Beaverton, Oregon headquarters. However, a twist ensues when Vaccaro discovers that Adidas has matched their offer, posing a significant threat to the deal.

Just when all hope seems lost, Deloris surprises Vaccaro with a phone call. She declared that Michael will sign with Nike on one condition: a percentage of every Air Jordan sold. Against all odds, Phil Knight recognizes the magnitude of this opportunity and agrees to the unprecedented demand, setting the stage for a revolutionary partnership.

The film’s climax reveals the profound impact of this collaboration. Michael Jordan’s endorsement becomes a catalyst, transforming Nike’s basketball division and establishing Air Jordan as a timeless symbol of excellence.

The film has received positive reviews from critics and achieved a global box office gross of $85 million.
